Urmil Mahajan has a BCom & Masters in Commerce from the Himachal Pradesh University of India. She then went to Iraq where she worked as Senior Engineer in the Expressway project. While in Iraq she was involved in several social welfare projects. In 1986 she returned to India and worked as a senior teacher in St. Vivekanand School till 1990 when she relocated to Mozambique. In 1992 the couple moved to Zimbabwe. In 1996 she joined Global Intertrade Network (Pty) Ltd and worked in various administrative capacities. In 2002 she, together with Anup Chand founded Cure Chem South Africa (Pty) Ltd and assumed the function of Director of Human Resources & Administration.
